A Roadmap for US Robotics: "From Internet to Robotics"

It is an undeniable fact that over the past few years there is a tremendous progress on robotic software, artificial intelligence and IT in different sectors, such as transportation, clinical healthcare, security, safety and agriculture and stock - breeding. A major progress has also been done on core technologies such as sensors, communication systems, displays and basic computing.

Food production and processing, represents a massive percentage of the US industry. Over the last couple of decades there has been a growing interest in use of robots as part of the agri - food sector. The spectrum, covers all aspects of food production, from planting seed in the ground, over weed removal, to picking mature fruit/vegetables. In general robots have been applied to precision agriculture, weed control, nursery automation and harvesting. Thus, it is necessary to design smart solutions that can cover multiple products such as crops, vegetables, fruits, but also animals, or fields.

In order to accelerate the development and effective testing of robot systems, shared community resources of testbeds for a variety of application domains with a variety of robot systems must be developed throughout the country, each with a particular application focus (e.g., agriculture, marine, manufacturing, medical).
